What is your personal opinion about this statement ? This feeling should flow into your creative process and your designs. 

Whether you solve the task graphically, illustratively, strikingly or by using various means of representation is entirely up to you. What is needed are your innovative conceptual ideas, your understanding of functional aspects, artistic processes and their comprehensible and creative representation.Develop a kind of sketchbook in which you present your visual ideas. Think about the relation to fashion design. In any case, the focus should be on the artistic representation, although you can also resort to short textual comments for further explanation. Surprise us with your conceptually innovative and visually appealing solution to the task.

General guidelines for the aptitude test

In the Bachelor's degree programme in Fashion Design, admission to the degree programme is made dependent on passing an additional aptitude test in accordance with the University Regulations of HTW Berlin (HO) in their currently valid version. The regulations for determining aptitude for the degree programme (aptitude test) for the Bachelor's degree programme in Fashion Design are listed.

Please read the following information carefully

For participants in the aptitude test, the homework assignment will first be published on our website - this will also be disseminated in good time on the social networks. For the winter semester always at the end of March and for the summer semester at the end of September.


After about 2-3 weeks, the link to the participants' online questionnaire and the deadline for the aptitude test will be published. In the online questionnaire, participants first enter their personal data. At the end of the questionnaire, they will receive a link and password to upload their documents.

After the deadline for the digital submission of the aptitude test documents (upload) has passed, all documents received will be reviewed by the selection committee.

For admission to the Bachelor's degree programme in Fashion Design at the HTW-Berlin, no pre-study internship is necessary!

However, design and processing skills are a great advantage.


The following should be included in the documents:

Your portfolio is simply digitised and submitted, in addition you photograph or scan your 20 best works (these can be the following works: figurative representations, nude drawings, sketches, collages, colour compositions, photographs, pictures of sewing work, fabric manipulations etc.) together with the pages from your sketchbook (see homework) and upload these as one PDF file each (file size max. 50 MB). The homework should be about 10 pages long.

You will be asked to enter a name for the upload link. For this purpose you should use:  Lastname_Firstname_MDBa[year] (Please remember, no special characters). This name will then be used to generate the file folder in which your subsequent uploads will be saved.

Please add the following pages to the digital portfolio:

  • On the first page, a cover sheet with your name, address, e-mail address and telephone number.
  • On the second page, the completed application for admission to determine your study-related aptitude (see application form).
  • On page three, show your work
  • On the third to last page, a short curriculum vitae (German, English)
  • On the penultimate page you explain what sustainability in fashion means to you (German, English). The text should fill a maximum of one A4 page.
  • On the last page, a sheet with the written declaration that the submitted work is yours (incl. signature)
  • The homework should be submitted in a separate file (PDF format, approx. 10 pages, max. 50 MB) with cover sheet, homework and a written declaration that the submitted work is your own (incl. signature).

So that we can get to know you personally, please also send us a short video clip in which you briefly introduce yourself and answer a few of our questions. The video can be recorded with a mobile phone and should be about 1 minute long (file size max. 150 MB). The video clip should help us to get to know you. You are welcome to send us an English and a German version, whereby the language of the video has no influence on the evaluation of your submission. 

Please use the following file name: Name_FirstName_DateofBirth_VD*.

* .mp4, .avi, .mov (again, please do not use special characters in the file name).

  • Where do you see your strengths in relation to studying design?
  • Where do you see your future in the fashion industry?
  • Do you have creative role models, if so which ones and why?

Information on admission to the HTW:

After reviewing the submitted documents, we will inform you by e-mail whether you have passed the aptitude test and can complete the further admission process to obtain a place at the university. 

If there are more applicants eligible for admission to the Bachelor's degree programme in Fashion Design than there are places, then the places will be divided equally according to the average grade of the university entrance qualification (Abitur, Fachabitur) and the waiting period. 
The procedure for determining aptitude for a specific course of study or for determining special artistic and creative talent is carried out twice a year. The next aptitude test will then take place again in April/May.
